I was just taking a well earned coffee break after running the kids to school, hanging out the washing (then quickly retrieving it as the heavens opened), dashing around the supermarket at a speed even Linford Christie would be proud of, and rescuing next doors cat from our apple tree(again), when the doorbell rang and in breezed Shirley, my best friend and partner in various crimes of fashion. She looked frazzled (as she often does) and explained that she had embarked on a mission to find a list of female driving instructors, capable of teaching her rather shy teenage daughter the skills required to be let loose on the open road.
I put the kettle on, and we began to scour the local newspaper for a list of female driving instructors. We found one almost immediately, but Shirley turned her nose up at that one and said her neighbours daughter had used her, and they had a crash on the first lesson and she refused to go back again. After much deliberation (and coffee with biscuits) we decided it might be a good idea to contact the dsa, maybe they would have a list of female driving instructors in our area. This idea seemed to appeal to Shirley, and off she went, happy with the next part of her plan.
A couple of days later I bumped into Shirley again, whilst running the gauntlet of the 'reduced' aisle at the supermarket. She seemed very pleased with herself, having located a number of female driving instructors within our area, and had actually contacted one to arrange a group of lessons for her daughter. She also told me, rather excitedly, that she and her husband had promised to buy her daughter a car as soon as she passed her test. I suppose that is one advantage of being an only child to rather overbearing yet affluent parents. She said that they hadn't decided on the type of car yet, but she had started looking, and the man at the local dealership waskeeping his eyes openfor a perfect 'starter car' as he put it, in the right insurance group for a new young driver.
The next time Shirley arrived at my house I asked her how her daughter was getting on. She was doing just fine and hoped to take her test within the month, and there would bea lovely new Mini in the driveway waiting for her when she came home.
